New construction and expansion of the municipal sports centre in Genk.
After the renovation of the swimming pool in 2008 the city of Genk decided to also expand and renovate the entire sports centre.

The architects fitted the new program in a separate building opposite the existing sports hall with swimming pool. The team designed a building consisting of three parabolic arches with a maximum height of 18 meters. The vaults accommodate two large sports halls which, in turn can be further divided into three smaller halls. 200 domes provide natural light.

Insulation curved roof
The design proposes a number of specific requirements in terms of acoustics, thermal resistance, dimensional stability and handling, execution method, compressive strength and cost to the insulation. During the preliminary investigation different insulation materials were checked against these requirements. Both as a stand-alone material and in combination with other insulation materials. In discussions with the manufacturers the limits of the different products were investigated. In addition, several mock-ups were also built in order to visualize the whole and to assess. Ultimately, the choice fell on the placement of a three-layer construction of mineral fiber plates with a thickness of 60 mm at the Steel Deck layer of the curved roof. For the concrete side wall a 4-layer construction from the third mineral fiber sheets with a thickness of 60 mm and one layer of extruded polystyrene of 100 mm was chosen.
