Biobased bouwen

Let the specialists at Bureau Bouwtechniek assist you with selecting bio-based materials and the building physics detailing for your building.

Would you like to use bio-based materials, but are unsure about the technical feasibility or the right choice of materials? Bureau Bouwtechniek helps clients, designers and contractors to translate sustainable ambitions into technically robust and feasible buildings. Thanks to our expertise in building physics, detailing and materials research, we make bio-based construction a practical reality.

Building with renewable materials

Bio-based construction is rapidly gaining importance. Not only because the construction sector must reduce its CO₂ emissions, but also because natural materials offer new possibilities in terms of comfort, circularity and health.

The transition to bio-based materials requires more than just a change of materials. It demands a different approach to design, detailing and construction. Building physics, moisture transport, fire safety, acoustics and constructability will become even more important than they are today.

Bureau Bouwtechniek supports design teams and clients through this transition. We help to ensure bio-based materials are applied correctly from a technical perspective and translate sustainability ambitions into feasible projects.

Bio-based construction without technical compromises?

  • Positive environmental impact (CO₂ sequestration): Bio-based materials, such as timber, hemp and straw, sequester CO₂ and contribute directly to climate targets.
  • Renewable raw materials: Unlike concrete and steel, bio-based materials are renewable and can regrow quickly. This provides an infinite source of raw materials.
  • Healthy indoor climate: Natural materials ‘breathe’, regulate humidity and contain no volatile organic compounds. This leads to fewer health complaints. Bio-based materials allow for vapour-permeable construction and are less reliant on vapour-proof membranes.
  • Circularity and reuse: Many bio-based building materials are fully biodegradable or reusable at the end of their life cycle.
  • Local availability: Many bio-based materials (such as flax, hemp and straw) can be produced locally. This reduces transport.

These benefits can only be realised when materials are used correctly. A bio-based building requires a well-thought-out building physics design in which moisture, heat, airtightness and detailing are perfectly coordinated.

And that is exactly where we can add value for you.

From a sustainability ambition to a feasible project

Bureau Bouwtechniek helps you avoid the risks associated with the incorrect use of bio-based materials. We support your project from the initial choice of materials right through to on-site implementation, ensuring that sustainability, build quality and feasibility go hand in hand.

Our expertise includes, amongst other things:

  • building physics consultancy and detailing;
  • objective material comparisons;
  • TOTEM analyses and sustainability advice;
  • technical support from design through to execution;
  • support for larger and complex construction projects.

Sometimes, a single well-considered choice of material can have a significant impact on a building’s environmental footprint. That is why we pay particular attention to the hidden materials, where the greatest gains can often be made.

A unique database for objective material choices

To make bio-based construction scalable, Bureau Bouwtechniek has developed its own database of bio-based building materials.

In it, we compare materials not only on their environmental performance but also on technical properties such as: Furthermore, the database contains practical experience from our own projects. This enables us to underpin material choices with objective data as well as lessons learnt from implementation.

  • thermal performance;
  • acoustics;
  • fire behaviour;
  • moisture behaviour;
  • feasibility and detailing.

Commitment

Because our experts actively participate in research, working groups and knowledge platforms, you have access to the latest insights and techniques. That knowledge flows directly into your project.

We don’t just talk about change; we also roll up our sleeves by actively participating in overarching initiatives:

Bio-Circular Construction Charter: We have signed the charter and are committed to drastically increasing the use of renewable materials in Flanders.

VLAIO COOCK project BIOgBOUW: We sit on the steering group for the COOCK project BIOgBOUW. Together with partners such as Buildwise and Embuild, we guide the sector in overcoming technical barriers to bio-based construction.

Sustainable and bio-based construction is a high-performance endeavour in a rapidly changing landscape.

Knowledge sharing

At Bureau Bouwtechniek, we do not keep our expertise to ourselves. We believe that we can only bring about fundamental change in the construction sector if we actively share insights, data and lessons learnt with the market.

  • Inspiring exhibitions: At our offices in Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent, we organise the ‘Van Nature’ exhibition on nature-inclusive and bio-based construction. Here, you can explore physical material samples, each accompanied by detailed technical data sheets compiled by our specialists.
  • Lectures and debates: Our experts regularly take part in seminars and expert panels, including the Climate Tech Forum (2024), Archilunch Architectura, Case Study: Biobased Research at Treebune, Lakeside (2026), Seco/Butgb, etc.

In-depth podcasts: We’re always happy to step up to the microphone to explore topics in depth. For example, listen to the Biobased Building Materials podcast on the future of renewable construction.

Our ambition is to support the entire construction sector in objectifying and scaling up biobased construction.

Biobased in practice

We believe that every major transition begins with thorough preparation and pioneering research. Although the market for biobased construction is still very much in its infancy, we are already at the forefront. Our focus today is on technically unravelling biobased principles and carrying out in-depth studies. We are now applying the knowledge we have gained to our very first physical projects.

A selection of our pioneering research, studies and upcoming projects:

  • Research ‘Treebune’ – Medium-rise timber construction: We carried out a specific study into the use of bio-based materials in medium-rise construction. In doing so, we are pushing the boundaries of what is technically and regulatory possible with natural materials on a larger scale.
  • Tondelier feasibility study: For an apartment block within the sustainable Tondelier neighbourhood in Ghent, we carried out a comprehensive, comparative study between a traditional concrete structure and an innovative timber construction. This provides developers with hard, objective data to make the right decisions.
  • Dimensa homes in Zulte: This project marks a wonderful milestone. From May 2026, we will begin the actual construction of three homes in Zulte, where we will put our bio-based expertise and collected data directly into practice on site.
  • Begijnhof: Even within the context of historic restoration and repurposing, we research and advise on the use of bio-based materials, ensuring that heritage value goes hand in hand with a minimal ecological footprint.

This is how, step by step, we are building the knowledge needed to make bio-based construction possible on a larger scale.
