Context

The former Atlas Brewery in Anderlecht is being redeveloped into a multifunctional urban space, featuring a mix of uses and innovative forms of housing. The project aims to strike a balance between heritage conservation, sustainability and social value, with a focus on open space, public accessibility, diversity and community interaction.

The historic ensemble of buildings, which has undergone various transformations over the course of 150 years, forms the starting point for the conversion. The redevelopment focuses on maximising the reuse of existing structures, with new functions adapting to the existing heritage.

Strategic densification through new building volumes is intended to create additional space without compromising the heritage value of the iconic Art Deco brewing tower and the surrounding industrial buildings.

In this way, the industrial heritage is given a new future, respecting the past whilst providing space for contemporary urban functions and forms of housing.

New development in dialogue with the industrial heritage

A new building volume enables strategic densification of the site without compromising the heritage value of the existing buildings. The volume connects the historic structures and integrates supporting functions such as circulation, parking and services. This minimises the need for major alterations to the existing heritage.

The lightweight concrete structure and façades clad in reclaimed brick are in keeping with the site’s industrial character. The new development organises the whole complex around two green inner courtyards and respects the scale and sightlines of the monumental Art Deco brewing tower. Flexibility and adaptability are key principles for the future use of the site.

The transformation of the Atlas Brewery proves that heritage need not be an obstacle to urban regeneration. On the contrary, by focusing on conservation, reuse and community, the site is once again becoming a meaningful place in Anderlecht. The Art Deco tower will serve as a future landmark, not only as an architectural feature but also as a social catalyst for the neighbourhood. The project illustrates how empathetic and intelligent design involving heritage can contribute to an inclusive and sustainable city.
