  • Advisors: ABT (stability), M&R Engineering (special techniques), Daidalos Peutz (acoustics) Ifset (fire safety), Memubar (safety coordination)

Museum aan de Stroom

Construction of a new museum to exhibit and centralise the collections from the "Vleeshuis", "Steen" and "Volkskundemuseum" on the industrial, maritime and sociological past of the port of Antwerp. On the roof of the spiral-shaped museum tower is a ballroom and restaurant, while a grand café on the ground floor connects to the large public square where several commercial pavilions have been erected.

Low-energy building

The museum tower has 2 climate zones:

  • a conditioned climate in the exhibition rooms
  • a fluctuating semi-outdoor climate in the spiral route.

The floors of the spiral tower are equipped with water pipes that serve as underfloor heating in winter. In the in-between seasons, the heat that enters on the sunny side of the building is absorbed by the water pipes and transported to the cold side of the building. The excess heat is stored in a buffer tank used to heat the building in the morning. In summer, the excess heat is removed through this water system and cooled with Scheldt water.

Façade engineering

Based on the specific parameters in terms of aesthetics, technicality and cost price, the materiality and execution method of both the opaque and transparent façade parts were extensively investigated.

For the opaque façade parts, extensive research was carried out into materials based on aesthetics, texture, modularity, frost resistance, anchoring possibilities and cost price.

The typical glass facade was custom-developed according to the specific wind load and settlement and movement of the building parts above. Besides these technical aspects, the replaceability and maintenance of the glazing also had an impact on the building design.

As executive architects, we help the designing architects with all technical and financial issues so that they can fully focus on the design. We also monitor the implementation and ensure that the objectives and plan are always crystal clear for all partners, so that together we can realise our dreams.
