Green Roof Revolution: Circular Methodologies for Roof Insulation

With the support of VLAIO, we are developing a methodology for reusing PU roof insulation together with Biesmans Group and V&B Dakwerken.
  • Partners: Biesmans Group, V&B Dakwerken

  • Client: With support from the VLAIO programme Circulaire Ketensamenwerking

  • Budget: € 99.960

  • Timing: 2024 - 2026

  • Status: In execution

As part of the VLAIO Circulaire Ketensamenwerking programme, we are jointly setting up pilot projects to test the dismantling and reuse of building materials after quality control.

With the data from these projects, we will develop guidelines and certification processes to ensure that the reuse of building materials increasingly becomes the new norm.

Initiator Biesmans Group

‘In Europe, the construction sector accounts for 40% of energy demand and a large share of CO₂ emissions. In addition, a significant proportion of construction waste is not reused, leading to waste and scarcity of raw materials and a heavy environmental burden,’ explains Lennert Schreurs, innovation manager at Biesmans Group, on why the project came about.

The traditional linear approach, in which materials become waste after a single use, is unsustainable. Reusing materials offers a sustainable solution and is a necessity. It helps save raw materials and lowers the ecological footprint of the construction industry.

Collaboration: the key to success

By joining hands, we bring together both technical and practical knowledge to enable reuse on a large scale.

  • Biesmans Group is deploying its expertise and infrastructure to apply and develop the circular methodologies,
  • V&B Dakwerken, an expert in roof renovation, will develop the certification processes and guidelines for efficient and damage-free dismantling of building materials
  • we offer support with our construction-technical knowledge and will take care of the broad knowledge sharing of the project results within the sector. This knowledge sharing will take the form of workshops, seminars and a fully-fledged knowledge platform on which other players in the sector will be able to consult the valuable insights.
