Construction of a new silkscreen studio with exhibition space and archive for the Frans Masereel Centre.

The pavilion is conceived as a Machikado or street corner, a place of frequent passage. The different distinct spaces such as the studio or the exhibition space come together in the middle of the Machikado.

The existing pavilion has a very simple geometry, a dome. List and Hideyuki Nakayama Architecture's design starts from two simple forms, a glass cylinder with a cone roof. The glass cylinder visually connects the interior space to its surroundings.

Technical details

  • Structurally polished floor slab as finishing layer.
  • Reciprook roof: 800 solid wooden beams each sawn and connected under a different 3D bevel. Each beam is supported by the previous one and supports the next, according to the geometry of a cone divided into 29 sections and 27 levels.
  • Visible techniques on the ceiling.

BIM

We modelled the BIM model in collaboration with Bollinger & Gröhmann. We were responsible for the aspect model architecture, Bollinger & Gröhmann worked out the stability model.

The pavilion itself has a singular geometry, namely a glass cylinder as its base and a cone-shaped roof. However, the challenges in this project were the different cut-outs in the cylinder, and especially the construction of the roof. This is because the conical roof is not perpendicular to the floor surface, but at a certain angle.

The gross floor area of the project is 417m²

As executive architects, we help the designing architects with all technical and financial issues so that they can fully focus on the design. We also monitor the implementation and ensure that the objectives and plan are always crystal clear for all partners, so that together we can realise our dreams.
