Modern city campus

The site housing the University of Antwerp's Project Development programme will become a modern city campus in the old city centre. The existing buildings on the site will be renovated, restored and supplemented with new building volumes. The site provides, among other things, classrooms, wood and metalwork workshops, multipurpose work spaces, exhibition rooms, etc.

A thorough historical analysis of the buildings and an in-depth inventory and analysis of the materials present are the basis of the design, with maximum efforts being made to preserve the valuable parts of the historical campus buildings.

The various detached buildings of the historic education site were linked by ingenious canopies and found passages to form a beautiful whole with an eye for sustainability.

Fellow project architect Barbara Arts looks back on the process and remembers that adapting the historic buildings to current thermal and acoustic comfort requirements while not losing sight of the heritage value of the campus and real estate heritage guidelines was the biggest challenge for her.💪🏽

The team also had a nice task ahead of them in terms of fire engineering. They are confident that their advice will enable the students to move safely between the old and new building parts. 🔥👌🏽

BIM

We modelled the BIM model of the existing buildings to be renovated and the building extension. DMT took care of the restorative part. These plans by DMT were included in the BIM model to obtain an overall picture of the site.

  • The gross floor area of the project is 7,348 m².
  • 5,495 elements were measured from the BIM model.

As executive architect, we help the designing architects with all technical and financial issues so that they can fully focus on the design. We also monitor the implementation and ensure that the objectives and plan are always crystal clear for all partners, so that together we can realise our dreams.

Circular construction

Studies show that with our global population, we use more raw materials and produce more waste than our planet can handle.

We found in the University of Antwerp a like-minded organism who, like us, integrates sustainability into its day-to-day operations. Together we decided to submit the Paardenmarkt campus as a case study for 'School building projects circularly tendered? Yes we can!" by

Vlaanderen Circulair.

With this research project, we aim to encourage a wide audience to build more circularly and to respond to as many players within the construction process as possible.

We do this by focusing on:

  • the inventory of circular products and services
  • create greater support for circular building principles by sensitising the various construction partners of building projects on the topic.

Concrete

  • Colleagues Katrien Van Lierop and Nadja Van Houten drew up a complete demolition inventory and also monitored material flows during the course of the construction site.
  • From the design phase onwards, they worked with respect for the building and the valuable elements present.
  • During the tendering phase, we investigated the possibilities of circular tendering in public projects.
  • We coordinate the circular demolition of valuable elements that are not reused with external parties, so that they can be used in other projects.
Curious about the lessons learned?
