In 1996, the City of Ghent purchased the former De Hollain barracks on Brusselsepoortstraat.
The architect was inspired by the nearby beguinage of Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Ter Hoyen. The central open meadow with trees, the wall surrounding the gardens, the single communal entrance to the site and the red walls are all reminiscent of the beguinage. Each dwelling has a small garden or a spacious terrace.
On the central open meadow stands a building with a central public function. In beguinages, this is usually a chapel, but in this case it is a nursery.
The houses all have the same basic structure: a skeleton within which beam-shaped volumes may or may not be closed off from the outside world. This creates unity in diversity.
