Project

Concertgebouw Brugge is renovating its entire building envelope (roof and façade cladding). The ambition goes beyond mere replacement: the new envelope must contribute to the transition to renewable energy and to the building’s energy efficiency.

Within an innovation partnership, an integrated solution is being sought that combines solar energy with maximum architectural and heritage integration. The ultimate goal is a viable and approvable product for the entire building envelope, with attention to aesthetics, historical context and financial viability.

Innovation Partnership

Bureau Bouwtechniek is part of a consortium with Artes and Saint-Gobain that has been selected for the design phase.

Specifically, we are responsible for:

  • technical support in the design of the building envelope
  • detailing of building junctions and integration of BIPV (Building-Integrated Photovoltaics)
  • advice on sustainability, energy performance and innovative applications
  • guidance on technical feasibility within the heritage context

Innovation

The core of the project lies in the development of an integrated BIPV solution for an iconic heritage building. The focus is on:

  • combining energy production and building cladding in a single system
  • aesthetically high-quality integration that complements the existing architecture
  • application within a complex heritage context with high standards regarding appearance and preservation of value
  • developing a reproducible and economically viable product

Phased development

  1. Analysis and initial research
  2. Exploration of technical, energy-related and heritage-related constraints. Screening of potential BIPV solutions and integration strategies.
  3. Development of a prototype
  4. Elaboration of concrete system solutions and construction details, tailored to the specific building envelope of the Concertgebouw.
  5. Test and trial setup
  6. Realisation and evaluation of a BIPV mock-up in situ (±10–50 m²), focusing on performance, aesthetics and feasibility.

This study phase is followed by the pilot phase, during which part of the building envelope is renovated, and subsequently the commercialisation and maintenance phase.

The final implementation phase comprises the further development, production and realisation of the new building envelope.

Funding bodies

This project is made possible by Flanders, the City of Bruges, PIO (Programme for Innovative Contracts) and the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund).
