Lot 1: Renewal and waterproofing of the embankment
The access to the main entrance of ZNA Middelheim, located on an embankment, was suffering from structural damage caused by water infiltration. A complete reconstruction of the roadway, including improved waterproofing and insulation, with a focus on sustainability and ease of use, presented itself.
During the preliminary study, the plan of requirements was modified. The new roof structure, the larger dimensions of electric buses, and the additional weight of the fleet of vehicles made it impossible for bus traffic to still travel via the embankment. Passenger cars (up to 3.5 tonnes), however, remained allowed. This led to a rearrangement of the embankment, with the development of a multifunctional roof following the protocol of climate roofs.
- Utility roof (RED): A one-way driving lane with a ‘Kiss & Ride’ zone and access to car park P1. Walking zones connect Lindendreef and the car park with the main entrance.
- Green roof (GREEN):
A green buffer separates the carriageway and walking zone. This buffer acts as rainwater collection and infiltration, with controlled discharge to a central pond in case of heavy rainfall. Low-maintenance planting was chosen to withstand prolonged droughts without permanent irrigation.
In addition, insulation was installed according to modern standards, using pressure-resistant cellular glass insulation with an integrated slope layer. This ensures efficient rainwater drainage through the central drains.
The works took place in three phases to ensure accessibility for visitors and staff.
