Sobinco (Zulte) is doubling its production capacity with a major expansion of its site. The project combines very clear logistical needs (production, storage, circulation) with a distinct architectural ambition: not “anonymous” industry, but a campus with character.
This expansion consists of five new volumes that together form a single industrial campus (gross approx. 22,500 m²). The largest is the warehouse (87.6 × 136 × 15 m) with mezzanine. There is also a production terminal (47 × 157 m), the Terminal Office (office volume for engineers as main access), the Connector (link between old and new) and, as an eye-catcher, the Sobinco Tower: a sculptural tower/workspace with a 360° view.
It is a project with a distinct architectural character and, at the same time, a technically complex assignment. It is precisely this tension that makes it so fascinating for us.
Complexity:
Project architect Ilse Deckmyn explains our role as 'making ambition possible without losing sight of reality. By getting involved at an early stage, you can not only cover rules and processes (building permit applications, standards), but above all safeguard the design intention by making smart technical choices in good time—and, where necessary, adjusting a concept before it gets stuck on site (as was the case with the Sobinco Tower).
Within the parameters of the design, we seek smart solutions that are technically sound and remain affordable. That is our strength: enabling creativity without compromising on quality or regulations.
"Our role as a local partner was crucial. We monitored the complex Belgian regulations, submitted the building application and made the design technically and economically feasible.”
