Until recently, Arthur's range was limited to the distance between his bed and desk. Indeed, his bedroom is also his workplace. Sitting at his desk with coloured pencil and paper, he lets his thoughts wander. In search of stories and scenes. Which, once within reach, completely take over from him. The concentration of his workplace, where time creeps by and is almost tangible, forces a certain stillness.
Arthur's work is overwhelmed by abundance. Abundance of colour, action, characters, objects, scenes and ... details. He himself says he is obsessed with details. They put him into a deep concentration that causes him to become even further removed from the world around him. Once there, focus and imagination are given free rein. Drawing and inventing run simultaneously. Intuitively and gradually.
‘I build my drawings with all small elements and use colours on top of each other. When a drawing is finished, it is coloured three times, by way of example.’
For several weeks, Arthur turned our entrance hall into his attic room. This collaboration made him step out of his comfort zone and think about his own trajectory. What it has been so far and what a next step might be. Who knows, maybe painting will still be totally his thing and this tastes like more.
