Sustainability starts with the building shell.

For our sustainability advisor Katrien Van Lierop, the envelope is much more than just a protective layer. She advocates a robust, maintenance-friendly and integrated approach that contributes to energy performance and climate objectives.

Her experience in projects such as Gare Maritime and Royal Belge shows that circular construction does not stop at demountable components, but also focuses on extending service life, multifunctionality and reuse. ‘What does not need to be demolished or built is the most sustainable,’ she says.

Katrien calls for a holistic approach in which designers, clients and façade experts work together.
