City Hall Antwerp in the press

HUB and Origin in collaboration with Bureau Bouwtechniek conceived the architectural design and masterplan for the renovation project on Antwerp’s Grote Markt, which took place from 2014 to 2022. The city hall’s façade and interiors have been totally restored, and its build optimized for energy performance and user comfort. Functionally, two main changes are facilitated by the redesign: the building’s ground and second floors have been partially opened to the public and the city’s councillors and their staff are now united under one roof.

Antwerp’s City Hall has been serving the city’s citizens since the 16th century. Despite multiple upgrades, the façades and the 19th-century neo-Renaissance interiors were in need of a thorough restoration. HUB; Origin and Bureau Bouwtechniek worked on the eight-year project, which has brought the city’s councillors back under one roof. The architects worked by respecting the essence of the existing structure – they restored the historic envelope of the building and returned the main entrance to its original location in the Great Market Square.
